Whew! What a whirlwind of a weekend at the Smithsonian Craft Show. I was (and continue to be) overwhelmed and deeply humbled by the incredible response to the quilts! It was wonderful to meet so many great people and to hear and see the reactions to the quilts-- I am blown away.

Running Comma Workshop is certainly an adventure-- navigating the business world while trying to make a living doing what you love is a roller coaster ride indeed. But, after this weekend, I know I'm on the right track...

AND, the weekend went so smoothly with the help of my amazing friends! Many of you met my weekend 'assistant' Jess O'toole. Did you know that she's a food writer, stylist and photographer?! She's the talented woman behind la domestique. You'll be educated and entertained when you check out her site-- and her photos are stunning as well! She took time out of her very busy schedule just to help me for the weekend!

Comma Workshop has been a whirlwind lately! In case you didn't see it in our newsletter or on our Facebook page, we're showing the quilts this weekend at the 30th Annual Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington, DC. What a huge honor to be side by side with some of the country's most innovative and progressive artisans and craftspeople!

I'm in DC now finishing up some last minute details before the show begins Wednesday evening with the official judging and Preview Benefit.

If you're in DC, please stop by to see me and my dear friend Jess, who will be helping me out all week. The show is April 19th-22nd, at the stunning National Building Museum from 10:30-8:30 daily. Tickets are available at the door. See their website for more details!

I was absolutely thrilled when Anthropologie approached us about designing and crafting a limited edition quilt series for them. That was back in October, and the quilts are now available on their website and exclusively at their new Upper East Side store in Manhattan. See them in person if you happen to be in the Big Apple.

There are six, one-of-a-kind, queen size quilts in this collection-- three are available online and three in their store. I thoroughly enjoyed writing the narratives for these quilts-- stories of traveling and returning home and the quiet connection between the two. You'll read about the Big Horn Mountains, cattle drives, bookshelves stacked with Proust and Bronte, hiking with Hudson and Porter in the rain, collard greens, and much more. Here's an excerpt from 'I Travel the Pass':

i traveled the pass and headed home
to the familiar sounds and sights.

the predictable train whistle. the little
painted egg that annie gave me. the
pottery piece from mississippi. even
grace greeted me at my front steps.
did you know that she sweeps the walk
every day like the little old ladies from
greenpoint? i think she secretly wants
to be one of them. her house is full of
photos of rust and metal and rural
landscapes. what a life she has led.
what a life we all have led. and you
traveled the pass too. home to photos
of nieces and nephews and dogs. all so
little then. home to the wooden bead on
the mantel that jack gave you. i wonder
where he is these days. out in wyoming
somewhere roping horses and playing
in the dirt. sometimes we wish we to be
there too, playing in the fields

we traveled the pass and headed home

holding on to winter’s last breath, with one
foot out of hibernation, stepping into spring

It was such a joy to work with Anthropologie-- stay tuned for more adventures with them!

Thank you to everyone who came to the NYC launch and trunk show! What a great time-- I loved seeing old friends, meeting new people and chatting about quilts and life and love...

A big thank you, also, to everyone who helped make the show a success! Specifically, thanks to my friend Jackie who organized and coordinated everything with Soho House NY-- an amazingly beautiful place to display our quilts and gather friends. I couldn't have asked for a better location. And, Beka, of Styled Creative who swept in and made the place look perfect.

And, thank you, thank you, thank you, to all of my friends who let me sleep on their couches, borrow cars, picked me up, dropped me off, guided me, directed me, etc etc... It was so much fun seeing all of you!

Some exciting things are on the horizon in the Workshop... stay tuned!
kerry_ comma workshophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10100611547416950281noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6815171489696911417.post-87244373769620167482011-10-22T12:00:00.007-06:002011-10-22T12:00:01.340-06:00Just in time for New York City...

The Counterpoint Collection is now on our website! See it here.

The Counterpoint Collection is a unique collaboration with award-winning creative writer, Jody Jenkins. It started last spring when I contacted Jody about writing a piece for the new collection... I sent him several photos as a catalyst and then let him run wild...

The result was a beautifully descriptive narrative that explores life’s joys and pains and the paradox of both attaching to and adverting these moments. When Jody gave me the finished piece, I experimented with it through both typography and handwriting. The result is The Counterpoint Collection-- 5 quilts in the series that use the signature Comma freehand cursive layered with Times New Roman and Verdana fonts. They are up on our website now, and will be at our New York City Trunk Show next week. Come see us if you're in the city!

Below are some of the photos that I sent Jody to use as a catalyst for the writing.
Well, the whirlwind week in Pennsylvania has passed. I'm just getting back into the swing of things here in Boulder. The gallery show in Johnstown at the Bottle Works Art Center was a great success! After an intense summer of finishing the new collection, prepping everything to be photographed in Philadelphia and then heading to Johnstown for the gallery show, the opening night was a perfect way to celebrate all of that intensity! People came out of the woodwork-- former teachers, neighbors, family, friends and strangers...the response to the show was beautiful and (a bit) overwhelming. It was so nice to show my work in the town where I was raised-- and to unveil the new collection! (If you didn't see it in Johnstown, it will be up on the website soon, I promise!)
kerry_ comma workshophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10100611547416950281noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6815171489696911417.post-80197421728942664022011-09-02T10:17:00.000-06:002011-09-02T10:17:21.802-06:00

Originally Comma Workshop was actually Kamma Workshop. To be honest, though, when designing the logo, the 'K' just seemed really harsh. I began to toss around the idea of Comma Workshop instead... And, what else does a comma represent but a pause, a space, and a breath--- reflecting the quiet, subtle design aesthetic of Comma quilts. Lastly, pairing the Comma with Workshop circles back to ‘intentional action,’ consciously and actively moving through the world.

Well, I’m off to India tomorrow, bright and early... I’ll be making the 21 hour flight. i’m headed there to do all things textile-tastic! Artisan cooperatives, traditional block-printing classes, and textile shopping are just a few of the things on my agenda.... I’m anxious to see how this trip informs the upcoming quilts. here’s to a great adventure--- I want to blog along the journey, but I’m not that tech-savvy. We’ll see what happens.

Comma Workshop will still be up and running while I’m away. It might be a day or two before I return emails, though. I'll be back at the end of March.kerry_ comma workshophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10100611547416950281noreply@blogger.com0
